Project Type: Social
Project Cost: $0, >$100
Project Attendance: Large (>50)
Description
Trivia Nights are by far Illinois Alpha’s most popular event. We open it up to all of campus and frequently have over 100 people in attendance. Participants are in groups of up to 6 people, and trivia consists of 8 rounds of 8 questions each, with the entire event lasting around 2 hours. After each round, teams bring their answer sheets up to the graders and all questions are both read out loud by the Trivia Master and on slides. Our chapter provides pizza to everyone in attendance and prizes to the top 3 teams.
Materials
- Large room with a seating arrangement for teams
- Question set & slide deck
- Answer sheets & pencils for each team
- Prizes (optional)
- Pizza/snacks (optional)
Cost Breakdown
- This event can be done with no cost to the chapter, but it is highly recommended to provide food and prizes. Cost breakdown for what IL-A does is below.
- Pizza (~$300) – This could be changed to snacks which would be closer to $50
- Prizes (~$180) -IL-A does gift cards, $15 for each member of the first place team, $10 for second, and $5 for third
Preparation & Administration
- Find a location for the event that has a good arrangement for teams. Pick a date and time for the event and reserve the room if needed.
- Advertise the event across campus. We have people fill out a sign-up form where they can also indicate if they are signing up as an individual who wants to be put with other individual sign-ups or if they are bringing an entire team.
- Write the trivia questions and prepare the slide deck. (This can take 10+ hours to do thoroughly, and IL-A is more than willing to share ours, see “Additional Notes & Resources”)
- Gather a couple of graders for the event. This can be executive board members or members of your chapter. For a 100 person trivia night, you’ll want 2-3 graders in addition to the Trivia Master reading out the questions.
- Order pizza/food and purchase prizes if you are providing either of these.
Additional Notes & Resources
- The question sets and slide decks take a lot of time to prepare, and since we have a lot of teams return each semester, we can really only use them once every 4 years. We are more than happy to share our previous trivia night materials, just reach out to our Trivia Master Megan Harrison at mmharrison1010@gmail.com! We don’t want to post them on this website because we don’t need people trying to cheat 🙂
