Company Talk

Company Talk

Project Type: Professional

Project Cost: $0

Project Attendance: Medium (11-25)

Description

Company talks are very well attended by TBP members and are an example of the unique professional opportunities that TBP strives to offer. This event will vary a lot between universities and companies willing to come speak, but it is highly recommended that chapters attempt to establish these events. At UIUC, we have regular company talks with Caterpillar, and have also had one with Barr.

Preparation & Administration

  • The main preparation for this event requires contacting companies and finding one that agrees to come for a talk. Typically, the most successful manners of contacting companies are either at university career fairs or through local TBP alumni that work for the company
  • Determine a time and date for the talk that works best for the company’s representatives. Take care of the room reservation logistics
  • Advertise to your members, especially those in a similar field to which the company is representing
  • The company should have their own content prepared, but it is recommended that the TBP member in charge of the event have some questions ready in case the conversation lags

Additional Notes & Resources

  • If chapter funds allow, offer to provide food to those in attendance, both chapter members and company representatives. Sandwiches or pizza are typically very popular
  • If the event goes well, the company may ask to maintain the relationship with the chapter and come back each year. Additionally, our chapter has had companies ask for our chapter’s resume book after the event.
